Graffiti giants paint West Hollywood library [PICS]

THE WEST HOLLYWOOD LIBRARY is decorated with gigantic works of art by graffiti / street art’s biggest names – Shepard Fairey, Retna & Kenny Scharf. The street-god artists were commissioned to each paint a mural on the outside of the library, officially making it the dopest library ever.
Didn’t know libraries could be dope? Shoot, son you got A LOT to learn.

‘Peace Elephant’ by Shepard Fairey of OBEY. The giant mural is a whopping 70 feet by 106 feet facing the back parking lot of the West Hollywood Library on San Vicente Blvd.

A deep blue script drips down the side of the building – fans of Retna will know his style anywhere. And within Retna’s signature calligraphy in this piece is encoded a message from a quote by Salmon Rashdie;

“Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination, and of the heart”.

Kenny Scharf’s piece faces a park where parents push their kids on swings and that is perfect.

  1. Very cool ~ these photos look like pieces from a quilt!

  2. I LOVE shooting street art. I’m headed out to LA in Oct. I’m going to have to try to get over to that library to see it for myself. The detail in this mural is out of this world!
